Welcome to Bates Motel – TV Review

With the premiere and opening of Bates Motel just happening in the UK, we finally get to see what the life of Norman Bates was like before Hitchcock’s film and Robert Bloch’s novel of the same name ‘Psycho’.

The new series, produced by Universal, stars Freddie Highmore, more commonly known as Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who plays the shows main protagonist Norman Bates, focuses on Norman’s teenage years at school, moving into Bates Motel and his somewhat strange relationship which is obvious from the outset with his mother and what dramas they unfold.

We all know what direction the young teenager Norman Bates is going in this new reinvented story, but what takes him there and why?

Moving to an eerie town. Towns folk who seem to be as weird or if not more weird than the towns new inhabitants and certain unavoidable events. It seems pretty clear that this show, its great acting, and steady yet well timed pacing is really starting to introduce new mysteries that will bring both answers and questions while keeping the viewer happily invested in what seems to be an amazing story, and really let us understand and introduce us a certain vulnerability within Norman and Norma Bates.

For UK viewers, Bates Motel can be found on Universal (Sky Channel 113) and a repeat of the first episode can be found on Friday September 13, Saturday September 14, and Sunday September 15.
